Minutes
from
General PTA Meeting
October 8, 2008
The meeting was
opened by Ms. Dollinger with a prayer.
Frank Zilinek/
PTA President
Frank stated that it was nice to see the
socialization between parents prior to the opening of the meeting. He then thanked all the volunteers for the
Carnival and Mums Sale. The Mums Sale
went very well for being put together at the last minute. Gail Stevenson, whose children have
graduated from OLSOS helped put this together. We sold 219 plants with a total
of 33 families. We got a good wholesale
price, and made $528.00 with little effort.
Upcoming
Events………Halloween Party
This year, we have an expanded haunted
house. The kitchen will be open as
usual. Frank thanked Connie Mahon for
arranging for the sign out front advertising for the party. Help is still needed for the game tables,
and 50/50 raffles. By now, everyone
should have heard from your class reps asking for donations for our gift
baskets. Some of the reps have stated
that they weren’t getting a good response.
If your rep calls, please try to help her out.
Sub Sale –
Halloween, Friday, Oct. 31
Bowling Night –
Sunday, Nov. 9
This is mainly a social event to meet
other parents/students. We will have
the entire alley to ourselves.
Expanded Scrip
Program – Maria Mulville
Last year we earned $12,000 from Acme and
Shop Rite. The “expanded” program
includes the Great Lakes Scrip Program in which there are hundreds of
retailers. You can use these as
Christmas gifts. An order form will go
home in tomorrow’s communicator envelope.
Certain retailers offer reloadable cards. Maria thanked Mrs. Grillo and Mrs. Muldoon for their help with
this program.
Campbells Soup
Labels – Rachel Axelsson/ Patty Schmucker /Coordinators
Rachel was unable to attend, and Patty
felt that since there weren’t many parents present at the meeting that it would
be best to send out a flyer in the white envelope to explain this program. Basically we get merchandise from a catalog
for collecting the UPC symbols off of Campbells Soup labels. Sr. Linda offered to put a link on our web-site
for Campbells Soup Label info.
Box Tops
We are still collecting Box Tops for
Education also. Please keep them
separate from the soup labels. Each
teacher has their own method for collecting them in the classroom.
Alternate dress passes for children of
parents who are in attendance tonight will be given out at the meeting. If you didn’t get one, please see Maria.
Frank then opened
the meeting up for any questions/comments…….
A parent of a new student asked, “How
long do the children get for lunch?”
Her child felt as though there wasn’t enough time. Ms. Dollinger stated that the little ones
get about a half hour, and the older children about 20 minutes. She felt that if they talked less, then they
would have enough time to eat. The
older children go outside to socialize before they eat from about 12:05 –
12:15pm (10 minutes), then they come in to eat from 12:15 – 12:35pm(20
minutes). The younger children go
outside after they eat.
Another parent asked, “Why do the little
kids have to sit quiet so long at lunch time?”
She felt that they had to sit quiet before they could go out, and then
once they got outside, whoever was monitoring the school yard made them be
quiet again before they could run and play.
She felt that this may be something that they aren’t developmentally
able to do especially since they have just been sitting quietly in the
classroom all morning. Ms. Dollinger
stated that this is something that they can work on to change, and that she
would speak to the teachers and lunch moms about this.
Basketball – Bill
Gray/ Coach/ Coordinator
Bill announced that the basketball program
needs help. We currently have 4 coaches
for 5 teams, and it would be nice to have at least 6 coaches or 2 per
team. Practices start in November. No experience needed – we will teach. You must be CAP certified, and finger
printed. There is a coaches meeting on
Wed. Oct. 14 @ 7pm. Kitchen help is
also needed. There is open gym going on
now for 5th thru 8th grades on Saturdays 9- 10:30am for
girls, and 10:30 – 12noon for boys. Pee
Wee division for 2nd thru 4th grades starts the beginning
of December.
Churchwerks – Sr.
Linda/ Ms. Dollinger
The teachers are working very hard with
this. Much work has been done this
week. One of the difficulties is that the younger grades do not get numerical
grades. Tomorrow, October 9th
is the halfway point, so you should check your child’s grades to see how they
are doing. Any problems – please let us
know, or ask Sr. Linda.
There is no school
on November 7th. Please note
this on your calendars.
The meeting
adjourned at approximately 7:15pm.
